Abeer Khan is an Indian filmmaker, photographer, and visual artist based in Mumbai. 

Born into a conservative household, her first escape was a window, and she has been suspicious of walls ever since. She picked up a camera looking for beautiful light but found bureaucracy, hesitation, social codes, and an astonishing number of people saying “no,”! Fascinated by the art of spotting refusal before it arrived, she became attentive to the inhale, the flicker of the eyes, the almost imperceptible gesture through which power quietly reveals, and in doing so, slightly diminishes.  

Eventually, she realised that every “no” has terrible peripheral vision. There is almost always another lane, another person, another hamlet, another way in. 
Naturally, this led her to wander:  through documentary, photography, moving images, poetry, grief, chance encounters, and the strange humility of being human. To her, creation is that fleeting coolness in the throat that makes you think, if only for a second, that everything might be possible. 

In her free time, she reads Urdu poetry and extends unreasonable generosity to bad films. 

Her career includes world premieres at the Künstlerinnenhaus Mousonturm in Frankfurt, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto, and venues across Berlin. Her creative portfolio features work shortlisted at the Berlin Commercial Festival, film showcases presented at COP27 in Egypt and COP28 in Dubai, and a major public photography exhibition spanning Spain’s key transit hubs, including Madrid’s Atocha, Barcelona, and Bilbao.

Abeer was raised in Mumbai, India.
She is a part of Bitchitra Collective, Monitors 15, Indian Women Cinematographer Collective,  
VAAICA, BGDM and Video Consortium.

As an artist, her work explores themes of inequality, injustice, gender roles, memory, childhood, language, grief, and spaces through a nonconformist, empathetic, and introspective lens in fiction, non-fiction, and video art.
