Mahim building collapse: How profit-making builders led to several deaths

Bodies of minors have been recovered.

Till midnight Faraz was calling up Rizwan asking his father to rescue him, indicating that he was alive. However, the rescue team was unable to locate him. The calls stopped just after midnight.

Rizwan Merchant had complained in 2008 about the alterations that had been made in the building, but the engineers did not respond.

The debris were moved to Mahim beach.

The collapse happened at the night, extreme rains made it tough for rescue operators.

Merchants’ family had just returned from a holiday in Turkey.

Rizwaan was in office with his older son Faiz and daughter Fiza when he heard the news of the house collapse.

Merchant's wife Asifa and mother Tahera were among the nine others who died.

"My son (Faraaz) was so cold I held him in my arms, he stayed immobile," said Merchant, 54, known for having defended actor Sanjay Dutt in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

In his hour of grief, the only consolation was the family’s two parrots -- kept in a cage - survived the tragedy. They were rescued unhurt by the fire brigade personnel on Tuesday
